Introduction
Pedigree means everything at the top end of the sport-utility market, and no luxury SUV has more pedigree than the Land Rover Range Rover. The Land Rover name dates to 1948, when the Rover group began building bare-bones 4×4 vehicles of immense off-road capability. The Range Rover emerged from that tradition in 1970, billed as the first Land Rover civil enough to be driven by a person in a business suit. With its solid-axle front and rear suspension, pushrod V8 engine and four-speed manual transmission, this two-door SUV was quite rudimentary by today’s standards. But it was immediately popular among wealthy U.K. consumers with a taste for the safari aesthetic. Sales didn’t officially start in the U.S until 1987, though quite a few Range Rovers were imported through the gray market in the years preceding.
Now in its third generation, the Land Rover Range Rover still carries considerable prestige. From an off-road perspective, it’s one of the most capable SUVs available at any price. From a luxury perspective, it’s probably the most elegant and distinctive utility vehicle on the market, despite a few rough edges. High pricing keeps all but the very rich from buying a new Range Rover — a fact that only adds to the appeal of this elite 4×4.
Current Land Rover Range Rover
The Range Rover is a five-passenger luxury SUV available in two trim levels. The HSE features a 305-horsepower 4.4-liter V8, while the Supercharged has a 4.2-liter V8 that is (surprise!) supercharged to produce 400 hp. A six-speed automatic transmission with manual shift control is standard with both engines. A permanent four-wheel-drive system is standard on all Range Rovers, along with low-range gearing and nearly 11 inches of maximum ground clearance. The standard Terrain Response system allows the driver to customize powertrain, suspension and electronic stability and traction systems to best handle five predetermined off-road conditions.
Engineered in the late 1990s during the brief period when BMW owned Land Rover, the Range Rover is nevertheless aging quite well. It employs unibody construction (instead of body-on-frame architecture) and a fully independent suspension (instead of solid axles). These changes make all the difference when cruising on pavement, as the Range Rover now delivers the composed ride and secure handling expected of a true luxury SUV. Yet BMW engineers went about their work carefully so as not to compromise all-terrain ability.
Cabin design is a mix of traditional and modern in the Range Rover. The upright seating position, blocky dash and large steering wheel evoke the feeling of an old-school Land Rover, while supple leather seats (with contrasting piping), walnut inlays and a navigation system with both on- and off-road mapping assure you that this is indeed a contemporary luxury vehicle. The cabin, like the exterior, manages to be both retro and modern at the same time. However, its controls can be rather arcane in fine British tradition. A roomy rear seat makes it possible to carry a pair of adults or three children in back, but cargo room is only average due to a high load floor.
If you’re looking for a premium SUV with unparalleled off-road abilities and a legendary pedigree, the Range Rover is an obvious choice. If you want to save some money and get a bit more on-road talent with that same legendary pedigree, the Range Rover Sport is a good compromise. However, any Land Rover has an albatross slung around its neck in the form of disappointing reliability. Buying one has been known to cause headaches (and breakdowns), which is certainly ironic given their status as go-to vehicles for adventures to Outer Mongolia.
Used Land Rover Range Rover Models
The present-generation Range Rover dates back to its introduction for 2003. Between then and ‘05, a BMW-sourced 4.4-liter V8 rated for 282 hp was the only engine available. It came with a five-speed automatic transmission. However, in 2006, then-parent company Ford replaced this engine with the current pair of Jaguar-sourced V8s.
Buyers interested in technology will want to pay particular attention to year-by-year changes when shopping for used Range Rovers of this generation. The navigation system was CD-based until Land Rover upgraded it for 2005 (although it’s once again a bit behind the times). A rear back-up camera and adaptive headlights were added to the standard equipment list for 2006.
There were significant changes made for ‘07 when the interior was given a mild refresh, with twin gloveboxes, new cupholders and a slightly more intuitive control layout. The customizable off-road settings debuted that year along with an upgraded rear differential and an electronic parking brake. Airbags were also relocated for better performance and a driver’s knee airbag was added.
There were two previous generations of the Land Rover Range Rover. Both are coveted on the used market, but potential buyers should know what they’re getting into: Range Rovers are phenomenal off-roaders, but reliability is poor and repair costs are high.
Sold from 1995-2002, the second-generation Range Rover is the better bet of the two for buyers seeking a luxury experience. Note that 1995 was an overlap year: Rovers bearing a “4.0 SE” badge are the new model, while those with “County Classic” or “County LWB” badging are the old design. For 1996, Land Rover added a high-line 4.6 HSE model, and for the sake of acceleration alone, this is the better bet: The Range Rover 4.0 SE was powered by a 188-hp 4.0-liter V8, while the 4.6 HSE took a 222-hp 4.6-liter V8 with considerably more torque. A four-speed automatic transmission and four-wheel drive were standard on all models, as were leather upholstery, wood trim and a high-end audio system. Interior furnishings were opulent by the standards of the day, with ample comfort for front and rear passengers.
Second-gen Range Rovers still had solid axles front and rear, but engineers fitted self-leveling air springs to improve their manners on pavement. There’s only so much you can do with old-fashioned hardware, though, and compared to other high-end SUVs, the Land Rover Range Rover’s ride quality was harsh and body roll was excessive around corners.
Shopping for a first-generation Range Rover could make sense if you’re looking for a dedicated off-road vehicle and don’t mind repair bills or doing your own repair work. Only a four-door version of the Range Rover came to the U.S., and initially it had a 3.9-liter V8 (rated for anywhere from 178-182 hp, depending on the year) and a four-speed automatic transmission. A long-wheelbase model known as the County LWB joined the lineup for 1993, and not only did it have another 7 inches of rear legroom, it upgraded to a 200-hp 4.2-liter V8.

Something about the new Lexus GX 460 seems archaic. It is old-school, off-road rugged in a world where most luxury SUVs have settled for being just tough enough to lug home a gallon of Rocky Road from the Safeway. It has a full ladder frame and a solid rear axle—just like a 1968 International Harvester Scout. At its soul the V8-powered GX 460 is as tough and capable as any Toyota Land Cruiser. That’s really no surprise since, like the Toyota 4Runner, the GX 460 is a version of the Land Cruiser Prado. But where the 4Runner appears brutish and ready for adventure, the GX 460 doesn’t look like it wants to get dirty, ever. Inside, it’s overstuffed with enough luxuries and gadgets to keep passengers from ever peering out the windows. Does that mean that the GX 460’s substantial virtues are buried under an avalanche of who-asked-for-it technology?
The Specs
How closely related is the GX 460 to the new 4Runner? Well, they both ride on the same 109.8-inch wheelbase and the slight differences in other specifications can be attributed to slight differences in bumper, roof rack and wheel design. The outgoing GX 470 rode on a 109.8-inch wheelbase too. This is not the case of a vehicle growing larger.
However, it is a vehicle that’s gotten heavier. According to Lexus, the 2009 GX 470 weighed in at a full-figured 4871 pounds while the base 2010 GX 460 is an obese 5305 pounds. That’s a 434-pound increase.
Fortunately, the GX 460 is blessed with a stout heart. The GX 470’s iron-block “2UZ-FE” 4.7-liter DOHC V8 has been replaced by the new, all-aluminum “1UR-FE” 4.6-liter V8 DOHC V8 (which is not, incidentally, the same 4.6-liter V8 installed in Lexus cars). Featuring continuous variable valve timing and a thirst for 91-octane or better fuel (but not utilizing direct injection), the new engine is rated at 301 hp at 5500 rpm and 329 lb-ft of peak torque at 3500 rpm. That’s a substantial improvement over the outgoing motor’s 263-hp at 5400 rpm, but only a modest bump up from the old engine’s 323 lb-ft of peak torque at 3400 rpm.
Strangely though, the GX 460’s engine lags 9 hp behind the essentially identical 4.6-liter V8 installed in the 2010 Toyota Tundra pickup, and the Tundra engine is rated to operate on 87-octane fuel. Intake and exhaust-system differences are the likely power thieves here.
The sole transmission behind that new engine is the same six-speed automatic used in the Tundra equipped with the 4.6-liter V8 and a step up from the five-speed used in the GX 470. It shifts so smoothly that its operation is effectively undetectable. The full-time all-wheel drive system has an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case and a locking center differential. The standard 265/60R18 mud-and-snow tires aren’t particularly aggressive by off-road standards, but the drivetrain makes every effort to help them gain traction.
Considering the amount of heft the GX 460’s engine must lug, that it achieves an EPA-estimated 15 mpg in the city and 20 mpg on the highway is surprising, if not impressive. And the GX 460 is rated to tow up to 6500 pounds when equipped with the correct hitch.
The suspension uses double A-arms in front with a solid axle on coil springs located by four links in back—hardly exotic stuff. But it’s complemented by a four-wheel Adaptive Variable Suspension (AVS) system and, on the rear wheels, Adjustable Height Control (AHC). Those both seem to work well enough, but the star here is the same Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) used on the off-road ready Trail version of the 4Runner.
The KDSS system manages the connection of the stabilizer bars to the GX 460 through the use of electronically controlled hydraulic cylinders at the points where the bars would otherwise conventionally mount to the frame. Extending the hydraulics has virtually the same effect as disconnecting the stabilizer bars and increasing suspension travel when the going gets hairy.
So that’s the substance and steak of the GX 460. The sizzle comes in the details.
For some, there might be too much technology crammed into the GX 460. The dashboard, center stack and steering wheel are an absolute riot of buttons, with knobs and sliding panels that hide more buttons and knobs. Of course there’s a navigation system, redundant audio controls, switches for scrolling through information displays, more switches that tell the all-wheel-drive system what to do, and, optional in Premium-grade models, a package that bundles a driver monitor, lane-departure alert system, “intelligent” high-beam headlamps and a dynamic radar-based cruise control system. You don’t have to be a Luddite to be overwhelmed by the tsunami of tech, but if you are one you’ve got a head start.
Really, how intelligent do headlamps need to be?
With its muted use of wood trim, brilliantly illuminated instrument cluster, “machined steel bar” plastic trim and elegant upholstery, the GX 460’s cockpit certainly has its charms and delights. But there’s got to be a better way of packaging all the controls. And shedding some of the more esoteric features would tone things down.

2010 Mercedes Benz S550!
Good morning importers!
USA Export Experts is proud to announce the arrival of the 2010 S550 to our line-up of cars ready to move!
Just a little bit of information about the S550:
Although it isn’t part of Mercedes‘ New York Auto Show exhibit, the
2010 S-Class marks a modest overhaul to the German automaker’s flagship
luxury sedan. In addition to interior and exterior refinements, the new
S550 and S600 come with a slew of new and improved high-tech systems,
including safety and convenience features.
The S550 continues to be powered by a 382 horsepower V8 with optional 4MATIC all-wheel-drive.
One
of the most noticeable changes across the lineup is the addition of
daytime LED running lights fitted to the outer edges of the bi-xenon
lamp units. The rear end is also accented with a total of 52
distinctively arranged LEDs in the two taillights. Gone are the
body-colored strips through the taillamps.
Mercedes-Benz also
makes more use of light as a styling element in the interior via the
standard ambient lighting, now with a choice between three lighting
moods: solar (amber), neutral (white) and polar (ice-blue).
Another
noticeable change at the front of the car is a more pronounced
arrow-shaped grille, plus a new front bumper with a light-catching
contour and a chrome strip below the cooling air intakes. Exhaust
tailpipes of all S-Class variants are now visibly integrated into the
rear bumper. Mercedes-Benz says its engineers have also implemented
specific aerodynamic measures to reduce wind noise.
Camera and
radar-based driver assistance systems include Adaptive Highbeam Assist,
Lane Keeping Assist and the Pre-Safe brake system linked to the
proximity regulating radar, which intervenes autonomously before an
impending rear-end collision. Other highlights include the Attention
Assist driver drowsiness monitor and Active Body Control with automatic
crosswind stabilization.
Engineers also managed to improve the
night-vision system with the introduction of Night View Assist PLUS,
which is equipped a special pedestrian detection function. The Pre-Safe
braking system has also been improved to reduce injuries in unavoidable
crashes. Mercedes says the car can apply maximum braking pressure
automatically around 0.6 seconds before what is recognized as an
unavoidable accident. The system therefore acts as something like an
“electronic crumple zone,” Mercedes contends.
The
multifunction steering wheel of the S-Class has been modified for
improved aesthetics and feel. The rim and airbag module are now lined
with soft premium leather as standard. The new, flatter airbag module
also lends a sporty touch to the multifunction steering wheel.
